Ice Cube Tray

I am about to launch into a most significant discussion of one of the seemingly most insignificant items we can concern ourselves with—the ice cube tray. So forgive me. I know there are wars being waged, floods over whelming homeowners, and crack babies being born to addicted and indigent teenaged moms. I know I could be participating in the war protest efforts, could stop loving the rain and go back to town and help out an old boss with the six inches of water that is inevitably rushing through her restaurant, or could go and rock a crack baby as it struggles to stay on this planet. But instead, I must fixate on the ice cube tray, as it is what is important at this solitary moment in my pitiful solitary life.

First, I have been raised with the lines many of us heard perpetually growing up: “Put it back where you found it;” “If you break it, you buy it (or fix it);” and “If you mess it up, clean it up.” So…when I stayed in a house with a bunch of grown men and found myself seemingly always the one re-filling many an ice cube tray—as every time I wanted a drink the ice cube trays and freezer vessel were empty—I would go into these miniature rages. I probably placed far too much emphasis on the empty ice cube tray that takes under thirty seconds to stick under the tap and stick back in the freezer, but COME on! I would bitch and moan, it’s a matter of respect and awareness that other people exist in the same unit as you.

The culprit was the dad, who drank huge tumblers of rum and cola and would fill a single supersized glass with at least one whole ice cube tray of cubes. His son, my closer friend eventually, would catch me holding up an empty ice cube tray, my head half in and half out of the freezer door, and would intercept my later turades with the fact that he didn’t use ice cubes so don’t look at him. He acknowledged the laziness that comes with putting an empty &^%^##@ ice cube tray back in the freezer! And then would scurry away so he wouldn’t have to hear my silly grumbling.

Anyway. Besides the empty ice cube tray b. s., I had numerous issues with the master of the house, and so found my own place to stay—researching, saving, borrowing, and packing over a couple of months time. One night, my good buddy and his best friend had gone out shopping and came back with an “early housewarming” gift. They had gone to Ikea and found an item they knew would be an I-get-it joke but also would be a unique kind of gift for me, the queen of iced diet grapefruit soda: they gave me Ikea ice cube trays. Now these are not ordinary ten-ice cube tray slot dealies; they are not in the typical white plastic. These are 1) made of rubber; and 2) for shaped ice cubes! There is a star-shape ice cube tray; an arrow-shape ice cube tray; an ice cube tray that yields long wand-like forms; and two other shapes.

Now, when I open my own freezer, I not only have a ton of ice cubes, but they are in beautiful and fun shapes and they are replenished often. And when someone asks how I like living alone in my new home, I give examples of joy that include the comment that when I open the freezer, I have ice…every time.
